Traditional Maharashtrian brahmin cuisine is strictly vegetarian and even uttering the words 'non-vegetarian' was a taboo a few decades ago. But things have changed. Non-vegetarian cuisine is gaining popularity and an increasing number of brahmins are being 'corrupted'! The number of non-vegetarian restaurants in Sadashiv Peth, Pune which is a hardcore middle-class brahmin locality, reflects the increasing popularity of non-veg. cuisine in this class. 'Aaware mess '(Aaware Maratha Khanaval), probably the oldest non-veg. joint in Pune (established around 1900) is located on Kumthekar road, Sadashive peth. Regular patrons of this joint claim that in all these years the taste has not changed.
The non-vegetarian dishes which I described here go with the theme of the website - simple and straight forward, unlike some of the non-veg recipes from Goa and Maharashtra which are elaborate and complicated, though irresistible.
