water - 1-3/4the cups or enough to cook rice
vegetable oil - 1 teaspoon
lemon juice - 1 teaspoon
salt to taste

turmeric - one fourth teaspoon
asafoetida - a pinch
clarified butter/ghee - no measure

Recipe

1. Cook rice as per the procedure in steamed rice.

2. Cook toor daal (split pigeon peas) following the cooking procedure in daal (yellow lentil soup).

3. When done, place bhaat (rice) in a bowl or plate, pour varan (daal) on top of it. Mix well adding little bit of lemon juice , salt and a dollop of clarified butter/ghee. Yummy!! Eat either with  a chutney or pickle or any subji.

Varan-bhaat is extremely delicious as well nutritious. It is also called as baby food because of its nutritious value. Its easy to digest. A Maharashtrian meal is incomplete without varan-bhaat.

My husband eats varan-bhaat adding sugar, but I prefer without sugar.
